Teach A Dog To Stay - 9 Easy Steps To Train Your Dog To Stay

To teach a dog to stay is actually as essential as training your dog to understand ‘stay’ command because by obeying stay command,  your puppy can be prevented from any unwelcome situations. More over to teach a dog to stay is most helpful to keep your dog still and calm while guests arrive at your house or when you have to clean the room without him bothering you.

Training your dog to stay could be a difficulty at first. To make things a lot easier begin the process of the training session in a familiar environment - clear of any interruptions. Most of all don't forget o get enough treats. Most dogs are motivated by praise and rewards to perform well.
After the pup gives his attention to you, the lesson can be started.

Listed here are the steps :
#1 Ensure that before starting to teach a dog to stay, he’s already learned the ‘sit’ and ‘down’ commands.
#2 Set his collar on and give ‘sit’ command. Once he's sitting quitely, say to him "good boy" and offer some treats.
#3 Keep him sitting then say “Ruffie, stay” in a clear and firm tone. To teach a dog to stay is not the same as teaching him to do tricks and games in which the tone of your voice can be the sort of cajoling.. So, give him “stay” command in an authoritative tone to ensure he knows that you are serious in this matter. Stay command can prevent risks of dangers of your dog or everybody around him.
#4 Position your arm in front of you - palm out, to make him stay in a calm position for 1-2 seconds. Praise him and say “good boy” then give him his favorite a treat.
#5 Release your dog next say “okay” and let him to go.
#6 After a while, call your dog and tell him to sit again. If he obeys praise him.
#7 When he is sitting, give him “stay” command and a hand signal. Now, move backward a few steps back away and wait for a few seconds. While he properly follows the command, offer a pat on his head, compliment him and give him a treat and say “good stay”. But if he goes, begin the training from step 1.
#8 Release your puppy by giving “okay” command then and allow him to move.
#9 Repeat the steps 5-6 times and gradually increase the duration of the stay.

The next level of the training:
#1 Give your dog ‘stay’ command then try to inch away from your dog. Progressively increase the distance.
#2 Teach him to obey this command while he stand or lying on the floor.  Your dog mustn't change positions through the ‘stay’ command.
#3 While your dog can remain put after you give him the command, it's time to practice with distractions. Ask a friend or a member of the family to give a sound or talk. Your dog mustn't move and stay in his position despite of all the distractions.

You should have patience and constancy to teach a dog to stay. Scolding and physical force will simply make your dog lost his interest . To stop your dog from feeling bored, keep the sessions brief, not more than five to ten minutes maybe once or twice daily.

Actually to teach a dog to stay could be exciting if you and your dog are both eager and have the same positive state of mind.
