How to Train A Yorkie - 5 Tips in Training Your Yorkie Puppy

As soon as you introduce your Yorkie the new home, it is important to learn how to train a Yorkie.This type of dog is intelligent and need a proper handling in the training so he can play, eat, sleep and roam around the house without constant supervision.

  1. Never scold your dog or use physical pain when training them. Instead, use a firm voice a word like “NO” which your dog will come to understand as disappointment. Use treats and loving praise when the dog accomplishes the task, which you have put forward for it to accomplish.  When training your Yorkie, reduce or eliminate any distractions first.  This may mean removing any other pets from the area, children or other people that may be nearby.
  2. Stick to one task at a time. For example, when teaching your terrier to come or return, stick to that one command only and do not move on to other commands such as “stay”, or “lay down” during the same session. Be firm and speak clearly when giving commands but do not yell. Be concise and consistent. 
  3. Another tip on how to train a Yorkie is to use treats as well as praise to reward your Yorkie for a job well done. Start out by showing your terrier their edible treat. Introduce them to the command and when the task is successfully completed, reward the dog with it’s edible treat and praise. Eventually the praise will take the place of the treat.
  4. Crating is one way to house train your terrier. Choose a crate, kennel, or carrier, which is large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around in. Furnish it with a comfortable and easy to clean bedding. Remember that accidents will happen and when they do, don’t scold. Clean out the crate and use a non-toxic cleanser to neutralize the scent.  Start crate training at about 9 weeks. Never force the puppy into the crate but use edible treats to entice it into the crate. You can even hide treats inside the crate, creating a game of hide and seek to get your Yorkie to enjoy its new crate. A favorite toy can replace these treats once your puppy has grown used to its crate.  Do not close the door initially. Once your puppy is using its crate on it’s own, close the door for a short period of time initially and then increase that time.  Take the puppy out to eliminate at times at which it will normally have to use the potty such as shortly after eating. Before you know it, your dog will be vocalizing its need to go out.
  5. How to train a Yorkie puppy potty training is actually similar to training it do accomplish other tasks, as you will use praise and treats to educate your terrier.  Paper training using newspaper or puppy pads is another popular method used to potty train Yorkies. Place paper or pads in an area of your home in which you have removed all items that may harm your puppy.  Once the puppy is used to using the paper to eliminate on, begin moving the paper closer to the door. Eventually the paper will be outside and then gone as the dog learns to relieve itself outside. Placing soiled papers outside will hasten this.
